After years of dedication, late games, and early practices, senior Mya Lira has officially signed to Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, to continue playing softball, searching to build even more skill and to set up her future.
Playing both softball and volleyball, also playing club for both, made it hard to focus on school at the same time. Lira quickly realized that she’s a student before she’s an athlete, and her coaches and teachers being understanding of her busy schedule helped so much with the stress of being a multi-athlete student.
“My goal going the JUCO route is to really improve my skill athletically, as well as taking the necessary classes for my career to set me up for medical school,” Lira stated.
Having a strong support system has helped Lira by encouraging her, ultimately helping her make her decision. People like her family, “coaches like Donnie Dittmar, Grechen Rahn, and [her] hitting coach, John Nelson” have really been a huge part of helping her succeed throughout her career.
Lira emphasizes that her family, including her parents and sister, have helped her push through this process. For Lira, it’s been a really long journey of finding a home for life after high school, so having people in her corner who constantly push her to be the best version of herself has also played a huge part in her career.
Lira’s teammate, sophomore Breanna Taylor, stated, “With both Mya and I being middles, it’s important that we have good chemistry with each other. We clicked last year right at the beginning of the season. Ever since I started on varsity, Mya has been a great team leader and always has a great attitude”.
Lira’s plans for education are to go into anesthesiology. Lira is still deciding what exactly she’ll do but she plans to get her associate’s in science at IHCC. After, she will then transfer out to a four-year to get her undergrad in pre-med, master’s in anesthesiology, and continue to another four years for medical school.
Indian Hills is getting not only an extremely dedicated and talented athlete, but an excellent, educated student.
