As the end of the school year approaches, auditions for the summer musical draw closer. This year’s summer musical was announced as “Something Rotten.”
“Something Rotten” is a musical that takes place in the 1500s, and follows the Bottom Brothers, two men who are trying to write a hit musical whilst being in the shadow of William Shakespeare. This comical show is predominantly males, but has roles that allow for gender-bending.
Sterling High School has not done a show within this time period for the longest time, making this show unique from any we have seen. Students have expressed their excitement for this new period.
Auditions for this musical are being held on May 20 and 21, where students must sing, act, and dance. Audition materials were released on May 1, so students could begin practicing and come prepared for audition day.
Sophomore Harper Johnson explains that “when I practice ahead of time, I come into auditions fully prepared, and ready to have fun.”
Students ranging from incoming freshmen to seniors in college are allowed to participate.
Along with alumni, students from other schools often perform with us. At the start of auditions, students are split into groups, boys and girls, and sing with those people. They continue by singing one at a time.
After the singing groups are complete, students are taken into new groups to perform the acting portion. The next day, the choreographer teaches students a part of a dance, whilst the directors speak on who they would like to hear sing again.
The cast list is released a week after, and rehearsals begin the next week. Even if you have not participated in theatre before, the program is always asking for more people to get involved.
It is highly encouraged that students get out of their comfort zone and audition for “Something Rotten!”
