Sterling High School’s annual award ceremony was held on Monday, May 11, 2026.
The important event brings together students, staff, and families to celebrate the accomplishments of the school year. It was a time to recognize the effort, growth, and dedication that students showed in academics, athletics, and leadership.
This meaningful event celebrated the academic success and achievements of students from the sophomore class to the senior class. The ceremony began by recognizing the sophomore class who were called up in alphabetical order. Students who earned a GPA of 3.75 or higher received a letter as a symbol of their academic excellence and hard work.
Next, juniors were announced alphabetically and received their pins for achieving the same 3.75 or higher GPA requirement.
Junior Kasey Weeks said, “This was my second year being at the ceremony and I have worked very hard to accomplish a 3.75+ GPA. It feels great to be recognized for my accomplishments.”
This recognition highlighted their continued commitment to strong academic performance as they progressed through high school.
The ceremony then moved onto seniors, beginning with those who had a GPA of 3.5 or higher, who were called up to receive letters. Following that, additional seniors with a 3.5 GPA or higher who already have received their letter were recognized and received pins.
Senior Emily Schwingle said, “Being recognized alongside my classmates makes all the effort throughout high school feel meaningful.”
Special recognitions were also presented, including Illinois State Scholars and Sauk Impact students, highlighting students who achieved exceptional academic standing and community involvement. Military recognitions were given as well honoring students who plan to serve in the armed forces.
One of the most memorable parts of the ceremony was when each senior was individually announced and recognized for their chosen colleges, scholarships, awards, and other accomplishments. The class of 2026 was also recognized for earning an impressive total of $2,616,930 in scholarships, including $2,256,436 in college scholarships and $360,494 in local scholarships.
The ceremony continued with the announcement of Sterling High School Students of the Month, listed in order from each month of the school year. Finally the Class of 2026 Students of the Year were announced: Charles Johnson and Hazel Pham.
The ceremony was a celebration of achievement, dedication, and school pride, honoring students for everything they accomplished throughout the year.
