Every May, the S.H.S. music department holds their spring concerts. Unlike past years, this concert included band, orchestra, and choir, instead of each group hosting individual concerts.
Each music group performed three songs, with these particular songs being chosen by students from all parts of the music department.
The concert kicked off at six thirty, with the S.H.S. band leading the way. With a theme of “Music From All Over,” the band played songs from Latin America, American Vaudeville, Appalachian Folklore, and Ragtime.
Junior Sarah Doughty shared, “I like all of the songs we are playing in band because for this concert we were able to pick all of the music, and all the songs are challenging but fun.”
Following the band performance, the S.H.S. orchestra was welcomed to the stage. They performed the songs “Danse Bacchanale,” “Dyhanna,” and “Shapeshifter.” “Danse Bacchanale” is a French piece that highlighted the variety of instruments and versatility of these students. Though they were very challenging pieces, their hard work paid off in the end.
Finally, the choir portion closed this concert. Both freshmen and sophomore choirs performed two pieces, whilst the varsity choir performed three. One specific piece “Baba Yetu,” sung in Swahili, was a long running piece in the varsity choir, since they started working in January. With it being the last concert of the year, band and orchestra teacher Erik Oberg, and choir director Weston Henry honored all seniors that have participated in the music department. The students reciprocated this action by gifting Henry flowers at the end of the performance.
The seniors were rightfully honored, and the choir will sing their last song on graduation day. Though it was bittersweet to watch the seniors leave, it was a successful concert, and a great way to end the year.
