The Peaky Blinders were a real life English gang located in Birmingham, England, around the 1920’s. The movie “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man” directed by Tom Harper, is a sequel to the show “Peaky Blinders” written and created by Steven Knights. Both can be found and watched on Netflix, following the gang leader, Thomas Shelby. The movie took place in the 1940s during World War ll. It shows how devastating the bombing of England was in Birmingham.
Tom Shelby’s son, Duke, took power and became the leader of the Peaky Blinders. People called the new Peaky Blinders ruthless, cold hearted, and said they will go after anyone who may try to stand up to them. After each bombing, Duke’s crew would target where the German bombs hit, trying to steal anything they could, mostly looking for weapons, etc.
In the beginning, the movie really pulls you in, wanting to learn more of the family relationship and why Tommy left power and let go of his leadership of the Peaky Blinders. The acting is great. The movie does a great job at illustrating the trauma Tommy went through. After his years of service during WWI, killing him inside. Making Tommy long for peace and freedom from his trauma. After a while, Tommy decides to return to confront his son about everything he’s doing. As he returns to the city, he learns his sister Ada was killed when she was trying to get statements to use against Duke who was working with Nazis.
When Tommy went to go see his sister’s body, he confessed he was the one who killed their brother. He killed their brother Arthur Shelby, after Tommy had consumed a lot of alcohol and was full of rage and wanted to free himself from their brother.
After the death of Ada, Tommy and Duke got together to destroy the Nazi’s plot of smuggling fake money into England. Duke did tell the Nazi group their plan and the Nazi group will aim to stop that plan and kill them.
In the end, Tommy and his son duke were able to defeat the Nazi group, destroy the counterfeit money and the group’s leader John Beckett, the leader of the Nazi group. Then in the end Tommy finally got the peace he wanted after his son killed him after the plan was done. All in all the movie was great, it showed how much loss, pain, grief, and sadness Tommy had.
This was a great way to end Tommy’s chapter in the story. Paving the way for Duke to begin his journey in the Peaky Blinders, honoring his father’s legacy. Long live, Rom Baro.
