This past December, the S.H.S. theatre department held auditions for the spring musical, “Hadestown.” “Hadestown” is a show based on Greek mythology, and features the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.
Orpheus, the son of a muse, has the intent to escape and end poverty on earth. In this process, he meets the pragmatic Eurydice, and immediately falls in love.
In this famine, Eurydice is taken to the underworld, where Orpheus decides to rescue her. This show has a New Orleans type jazz, or Indie-folk style, which is different from the typical musical style.
The auditions for this musical took place on December 10 and 12, and the cast list was released on the 17.
This cast list is known to be the smallest in several years, with a total of 18 people. This altogether means the ensemble is 10 people in total, making the singing much more difficult.
Rehearsals kicked off on January 6, and became fast-paced from there. Students began working on music immediately, due to the show being completely music, with no dialogue in between.
Each rehearsal is from 7-9pm, but as the time before the shows shortens, the practices grow longer. Junior Jocelyn Pink states that her experience has been “fun, new, and exciting!”
For the first few weeks, students would practice at both the woodshop and the auditorium, since the set was being built there. This set is different from anything we’ve done before, with a turntable being included.
A turntable is a circle platform that spins on the stage, and is not easily obtainable for high school productions. It takes lots of work to learn how to walk on it, but overall makes the set look complete.
Sophomore Harper Johnson believes that this show is different from others because “the technology is more advanced, and the cast is very small and tight-knit.”
Overall, the cast has been striving to create the best show they possibly can, and should be a stop for you the weekend of February 27-March 1.
