The poms team recently performed their Guy/Girl dance on January 30 for the boys varsity basketball game against Quincy. Each year, it is always for the crazy for cure basketball game. The girls on the dance team pick a guy to have as their partner that they will perform during halftime with.
The seniors then make a mashup of popular and trendy songs for the dance that both girls and guys will enjoy. The entire dance team then works together on preparing the dance a week before teaching it to the guys. Each girl is able to give any ideas and input on moves that they would like to include in the dance.
When choosing a partner, it can sometimes be difficult. The guy who participates can’t be on the basketball or wrestling teams. The practices are held Monday through Thursday from 5-6 p.m., using this time to learn and prepare for the dance that they will perform at Friday night’s game. The coaches and girls make sure the guys are fully comfortable, prepared and understand what they are doing before performance day.
Some of the guys chosen have participated in the guy/girl dance for multiple years.
Sophomore Josue Grande shared, “Doing the Guy/Girl dance two years in a row was a fantastic experience, and going outside my comfort zone to do a silly dance in front of many people is an experience I recommend to everyone. My favorite part was creating friendships and memories with new people and also the food we got beforehand. My least favorite part was the moment right before we walked up to the court because of the pre-performance jitters, although they vanished as soon as the music began”.
On the day of the performance, the team held a dinner, and all the girls and their partners were invited. The team dinner took place around 4:30 p.m., and everyone returned to the school around 5:30. Once they got back to the school, they all met up to be able to walk through the dance to make sure they were ready.
The girls’ first perform on the sidelines at the beginning of the game while the boys varsity team warms up. They then perform their dance at halftime of the boys varsity game.
This was senior Ian Hilty’s first year doing the dance. Hilry said, “I really enjoyed meeting some new people during the whole experience, I made some friends that I wouldn’t have had before. The performance in itself was also very exciting, one of my favorite things was getting hyped before and after the dance with all the guys. My least favorite thing is that no one actually completed or even tried a backflip.”
Many of the guys said they had a great time and really enjoyed it. Although they were nervous at first, they were glad they participated.
In all, this is a fun and exciting tradition that has gone on for many years. Each group pair is given a different colored shirt with their last names printed on the back to be represented as one, with always having the Guy/Girl dance at the crazy for cure game, to honor those who have fought or are fighting for cancer.
The dance team had a really great time this year participating in the guy/girl dance, with many amazing guy partners, and can’t wait for many years to come.
