On Saturday, December 20, 2025, the S.H.S. competition dance team competed at the Kewanee Dance Invitational. Tryouts were held on October 27, separately from football/basketball tryouts, unlike the previous year. Seven poms/dance team members made the competition team.
Last year, the team competed with a poms style routine and this year, they performed a lyrical dance. The competition team only had about a month to learn and then perfect their dance for the competition. Practice was held once a week for an hour. The girls used the poms room and the gym when it was available.
The team’s costume was a satin berry-colored lyrical dress with their hair style being worn pulled back in a low bun. Their costumes were ordered from Weissmen which is a good reliable dance costume website. For this style of dance, lyrical shoes were worn. Other styles of dance at the competition included, jazz/poms, lyrical and contemporary. There were more poms style dances than any other style of dance at this competition.
Sophomore Ronni Oyen said, “Going to the competition was so different from our normal performances. I loved just spending a day with the people on the team and watching other dancers perform.”
The girls kept a positive mindset all through competition and this experience. The atmosphere of the competition was overwhelming with support for the dancers and made a great experience for the whole team.
Poms coach Kennedy Anderson picked the cover song “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon for their routine. They ended up scoring eighth place out of ten places at the competition, but regardless of their score, they had fun and tried their best. Many friends and family members traveled there to cheer them on.
Freshman Ada Molina said, “Sometimes the biggest win is knowing we tried our best, we supported each other, and we grew together.”
The team is willing to work harder and come back stronger next year.
