On January 2, S.H.S.’s Future Educator Club (F.E.C.) hosted their third annual social event for future educators, college students, and S.H.S. alumni currently in the education field. The event is hosted by club advisors Heather Johnson and Sara Dail, who are helped in the planning process by current S.H.S. students in the club.
Johnson acknowledges how the social event “is unique in that it encourages students to have a social experience with college-aged students and adults, all of whom are currently in or pursuing careers in education. Oftentimes student club events are focused solely on the student experience, and this event bridges the student experience with the career experience.” Johnson, who is also the current Introduction to Education instructor, has been a vital asset to the district’s aim to staff recruitment and retention.
Besides discussion about the education field, attendees played an array of board games. Sophomore Sophia Lopez’s favorite game was “a card game where [she] was the only one losing over and over again.” These games allowed everyone to interact and mingle with one another in fun and interactive ways.
This year, the club saw a decline in S.H.S. students attending both the club and the social event. Dail reflects on this and hopes that “more S.H.S. students will attend. The start of January is a busy time and many people travel but we would love to see more S.H.S. students show up for this exciting event.“ She hopes to work with involved students to encourage their peers to explore new career fields.
In the future, F.E.C. hopes to continue encouraging high school students to seek careers in the education field. With much success so far, future educators are looking forward to next year’s social event.
