Seniors at Sterling High School have the opportunity to apply for Student of the Month, one of the school’s greatest titles bestowed at S.H.S. The Students of the Month award is awarded to two individuals who have challenged themselves academically, participated in numerous extracurricular activities/athletics, and displayed S.H.S. in a positive light. Seniors Leila Anderson and Grant Hartman were awarded this honor for November.
Within his four years at S.H.S., Grant Hartman has reached a notable grade point average of 3.68. He is currently enrolled in Sauk Valley Community College’s dual-enrolled welding course, and has continued his trades knowledge at Whiteside Area Career Center. When not in the classroom, Hartman is an active member of FFA, boys golf, and baseball. Recently, Hartman served as one of the golf team’s captains and won the Most Valuable Player award. Recently, he was also named a member of academic all-conference in both golf and baseball.
After graduating from S.H.S., Hartman plans to attend a trade school for either welding or diesel mechanics. He may also join the military. Hartman’s dedication to his future career path makes him stand out from his peers and puts him in a great position for success post-high school.
The other Student of the Month for November is Leila Anderson. Anderson holds a grade point average of 4.07. To maintain this G.P.A., Anderson has taken rigorous courses such as AP Human Geography, AP U.S. History, AP Government, AP Psychology, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Statistics, AP Language and Composition, and AP Literature and Composition. As an underclassmen, Anderson was enrolled in accelerated English, Math, and Science courses. Anderson has been recognized for her academic achievement having been named an AP scholar and top 25 of her class.
Anderson is involved in many extracurriculars and currently serves as the president of Student Council and a senior class officer. Anderson also participates in theatrical and choral activities in the winter and spring, after she played on the girls tennis team for four years.
Post-high school, Anderson hopes to attend an undecided four-year university and major in nursing. She will ultimately pursue a career in the medical field.
Hartman and Anderson are both dedicated individuals who have represented S.H.S. well and will go on to lead a successful future.
