Sterling High School’s National Honor Society hosted the induction for all new members in the S.H.S. auditorium on Tuesday, November 18. National Honor Society is an organization that acknowledges students who display strengths in leadership, service, character, and scholarship.
For acceptance into National Honor Society, students must be a junior or senior and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. S.H.S. counselor.
National Honor Society Officers, seniors Maggie Morris, Mackenzie Wolfe, Hazel Pham, and Gavin Fisher, are in charge of managing monthly meetings that focus on leadership skills and community service.
Led by National Honor Society advisor Darci Francis, members participate in projects as a group, and also focus on independent community service hours as well.
Prior to the ceremony, students who were eligible were sent an email and were required to fill out an application. Once the application was sent in, it was reviewed by S.H.S staff. If they were accepted, they got an email declaring their acceptance.
Students then met with Francis to discuss what the National Honor Society is and the requirements are to stay in it.
At the induction ceremony, the officers gave speeches. Wolfe’s speech was about scholarship, Morris’s was about character, Pham’s was about service, and Fischer’s was about leadership.
Wolfe says she was “nervous leading up to the ceremony and giving [her] speech, however once [she] was speaking on the topic [she] felt comfortable because [she] truly [feels] that [she] expresses the four pillars of NHS.”
After the speeches, the 2025 National Honor Society inductees were called up to receive a candle and a certificate. Students passed their candles around to help light the candles.
Junior Derek Prieto says he “felt great and it was a wonderful experience. [He] was honored to be part of the ceremony and share the event with fellow classmates.”
National Honor Society is a great opportunity to recognize students who demonstrate excellence in the four areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
