Every year, the Student Council votes on new officers, including a representative from each grade level, a president, and a vice president. This gets the council a total of six officers: senior Leilana Block, president; junior Jubraan Alkhalaf, vice president; Sophia Torres, freshman representative; Gavin Fischer, sophomore representative; Adamari Gutierrez, junior representative; and Kirsten Workman, senior representative.
To become an officer, each candidate writes a 500-character paragraph about why they should be elected. From there, they submit it to advisors Nicole Schlemmer and Alexis Ruiz, where they’ll share it with all the students who are allowed to read it then vote who they want to win.
This year they did something different. Ruiz explains that presidential candidates “also went through an interview with Mrs. Schlemmer [herself] and the administration.”
After the officers are picked, they are responsible to serve as the school’s student leadership team. Sophomore representative Gavin Fisher said “[w]hile there are class officers, we represent the entire school to district and school administration.”
The officers lead the groups when the student council breaks out into groups at meetings. From these meetings, officers report back to one another. They are constantly communicating with district and school administrators and reporting back to the student council.
Junior representative Adamari Guttierez said “[a]s junior representative, I take all suggestions from juniors and present them at our executive board meetings.” Along with taking suggestions Guttierez said “I also come up with new activities for the club to do.”
Overall, this year’s new executive board is promising and willing to do whatever it takes to make the school better for its students.
