Given the amount of history the school has managed to acquire over the years, it seems odd that so much of it goes unnoticed. It is therefore prudent to bring it into the spotlight so that it is not forgotten entirely. So without further ado, here are 25 things about Sterling High School that you may not know: 

  Did you know that the current stadium stayed the exact same for 70 years from 1940-2010 when the grass field was ripped up and replaced with a turf one?

Or that the current school building was constructed in 1950?

Or that there is a tunnel under the school that was once used for tornado drills? 

Or that the library was added in 1974 due to a lack of academic resources at the old library?

Or that the library was added onto in 2008, which is when the classrooms were put in?

  Did you know that because of WW2, construction of the school had to be put off?

Or that S.H.S. employed 57 teachers? 

Or that our chess team has gone to state for over 10 years in a row? 

Or that we have 20 active clubs? 

Or that the district’s graduation rate is 91%?

  Did you know that the class of 1979 got a week off of school on account of the biggest winter storm Sterling has ever seen?

Or that in 2021 the group interpretation team went to state for the 25th season in a row?

Or that our yearbook was first published in 1904?

Or that our choir program is also from that year? 

Or that the school newspaper started in 1913?

  Did you know that the blue and gold represent the sky and ripe grain? 

Or that the drama club started in 1946?

Or that the loyalty song was written in 1915 by a junior? 

Or that in the 1949—1950 season, the boys basketball team went to state with a record of 20 wins to 9 losses?

Or that in 2005, the group interpretation team won the state championship, something only accomplished once before, by the girls basketball team in 1977?

Or that our chess team started out as a club during the 2009—2010 school year?
