Some Sterling High School students make the crucial decision of going into the Armed Forces. They had to choose one of the four branches which include the Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. The Armed Forces come with great benefits, but unfortunately a few disadvantages as well. Sterling High School has had graduates go into the Armed Forces for many years. This year, seniors Aiden Forth and Danica Brooks plan to go into the Armed Forces.
Some of the benefits can include getting paid during tech school, discounts at certain stores, and free housing and food throughout basic training and tech school. The Armed Forces also pay for college after service if you qualify. Most people who join the Armed Forces right after high school have the opportunity to retire very early in life.
While there are many benefits, there are several disadvantages including feeling lonely, only getting a certain amount of phone time, and a set amount of written letters. It can be difficult being away from the people you have been around every day for years.
Forth plans to go into the Air Force after he graduates. Basic training is seven and a half weeks ends with a ceremony and parade that families can attend. This event is an awesome experience for both the graduate and their loved ones. He wants to serve “anywhere from four to eight years.”
Ever since he was a kid, Forth has wanted to join the Armed Forces, but he is not quite sure what type of job he will go into. In the Air Force, there are a wide range of jobs. According to airforce.com, these jobs include healthcare, maintenance and repair, science and technology, aviation and flight, logistics and administration, cyber and intelligence, special warfare and combat support, and law and order. After careful thought and job offers, Forth will find the right job for him.
Some people are inspired to join by their family’s involvement. Brook’s older sister graduated from basic training this year. She was influenced by this, so she is “currently in the process of joining the army national guard.” Basic training is 10 weeks long with three phases designed to transform ordinary civilians to citizen-soldiers. She is initially going to serve for eight years but may extend that time later on. Brooks is joining because “they will help [her] explore career options.”
Brooks plans to go to school to become an electrician while in the army and most likely get an electrical Military Occupational Specialty (MOS). Brooks made the crucial decision of joining the Armed Forces, which will hopefully lead to success in life.
The Armed Forces accept a wide variety of people. This makes it a good backup option along with a first pick. It is a good idea for everyone to keep it in the back of their minds; the Armed Forces can be an amazing opportunity for everyone.
