As school is just beginning, many of the incoming freshmen don’t know what to expect. I remember myself walking into the high school thinking I might not make it past the first week.

Freshman Emmanuel Arreola said, “On the first day I was slightly nervous. I knew I had to prepare myself to be the best student and to be successful this year.”

If you want to succeed as a freshman, you need to be confident in yourself. All students, but especially freshmen, should show up to class on time and get enough rest the night before in order to wake up energized. If school starts at 8 a.m., show up at 7:45 to make sure you make it on time.

Participate in school activities or school sports. If you see a school event going on like a football game, go and support the team. Going to events is a great way to socialize with new people.

Turn in work on time and study before all and any test or quizzes. When you get the chance, take all the notes you can. Respect every teacher and when they tell you to do something, listen to them and do it to the best of your ability.

Foods teacher Jamie Ruiz says, “Our job is to help you develop good study habits, become the best version of yourself and develop pride and confidence in your education.”

S.H.S. Principal Jason Austin always tells the incoming freshman that their first year is the most important because it depicts how they will do for the rest of their high school career. Senior Lucas Austin said, “My freshman year I made sure I had straight A’s. Also trying to get close to teachers benefited me.”

Success is key to winning in life. Starting out your high school career by being successful is the way to go. When you fail, you keep trying. That’s how winning is done.
