  Sterling High School awards the title of student of the month to students who have challenged themselves academically and go above and beyond to succeed. The title was awarded to Owen Maxwell and Lizbeth Valdivia for the month of May. 

  Maxwell has shown himself to be a very hard working student that strives for success. He has an astonishing GPA of 3.795. He has taken many accelerated and AP classes including AP Language and Composition, AP Psychology, and Accelerated Algebra 2.

  His high school career has been full of achievement including High Honor Roll all four years of high school. He was also a part of Homecoming Court freshman year, and Prom Court his senior year. Maxwell has also participated in many clubs and activities including Robotics Club and was an administrator for the club his senior year. He participated in cross country his freshman and sophomore years. Maxwell also participated in track freshman year, and was on the swim and dive team his junior year. 

  Besides being an incredible student, he volunteers outside of school for swim meets, and helping his elderly neighbors take care of their homes. Owen enjoys programming, being with friends, and playing with his dog. After high school, he plans to pursue a computer science degree or a cyber security degree at a four year college. 

  The other student awarded was Lizbeth Valdivia who has continued to show that education has always been a priority for her in these last four years. She proves this by maintaining her GPA of 4.244. Some of the AP or accelerated classes she has taken include AP Human Geography, Accelerated Bio, and AP Calculus. 

  She has many honors, awards, and achievements including Freshman Student of the Month, Rotary Scholar all four years of high school, High Honor roll all four years, AP Scholar sophomore through junior year, and was a part of National Honor Society junior and senior year. She also shows great leadership as a senior class officer. Valdivia participated in many clubs and activities which include cross country and soccer all four years of high school. She was in student council sophomore through senior year, national honors society junior and senior year, young doctors league sophomore through junior year, key club senior year, Latino club sophomore year, and band sophomore and junior year. Valdivia won Most Improved her junior year on her cross country team. She grew great leadership skills as she was on the varsity team for cross country and varsity for soccer. 

  Outside of school, she works as a barista at Starbucks. Her hobbies include working out, reading, listening to music, and researching subjects on true crime. Valdivia plans to pursue a degree in psychology at an undecided university. Once obtaining a bachelor’s degree, she plans to either apply to a medical school and find a career in clinical psychology or continue to get her masters in psychology and find a field in forensic psychology.
