As the football cheer season comes to an end, the basketball cheer season is approaching. Tryouts will be October 25 through October 27 5:30-7:00 at Challand Middle School. In addition to sideline cheer, there will be tryouts held for the new competition team.
There will be stricter requirements for making this team. The top 16 scores will be taken, without any role of seniority. There could possibly be a chance for two alternate positions. Senior Adylyn Crandall, who plans to try out, said, “I am excited we are bringing back the competition team, and I can’t wait to see what is to come.”
The competition team is making a comeback after getting shut down in 2020 due to COVID. S.H.S. athletic director Evan Wyllie asked coach Laci Halverson if she would like to sign up for competitions during the 2025-26 school year. After accepting this offer, Halverson began planning and creating a try out guide. The competition team is looking for hardworking, committed, and spirited cheerleaders. When asked about the upcoming season, Halverson said “My hope is that the team feels strong, confident, and can feel proud of what they have accomplished.”
The competition team will be competing in two competitions to ease back into this style of cheer. One of the competitions will be held at Challand Middle School. Due to basketball cheer also having practice and limited coaches, the competition team will practice November 3rd-6th and the 10th-13th 3:15-5:00. Starting November 17th, practices will be Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-6:00.
Previous cheerleaders are excited for this new addition because it offers a different cheer atmosphere. Competitive cheer has an easier schedule than sideline cheer. The team will learn one routine taught by coach Halverson.
Junior Paizley Johnson says “I’m looking forward to trying out for competition cheer this year because it’s something new for the cheer team and I think it will be exciting to push our team to be the best we can be.”
