Sterling High School’s travel club led by travel club advisors Heather Johnson and Cami Hartman recently ventured out to a scenic hiking trip to Castle Rock State Park. They got the opportunity to take a step out of the classroom and take a breath in the crisp fall air and explore some of Illinois’ most beautiful features.
Students that went include Mia Rodriguez, Janet Brito, Caylee Lyons, Harlow Bond, Emberlin Noack, Zander Appleman Kutz, Azariah McGee, Maya Nannigna, Tenley Schumaker, Derek Wilson, Olivia Cathey, Evelyn Camacho, and Kasinia Diaz. For many students, the excitement began before the hike.
McGee stated, “I really love being outside, I wanted to see what wildlife in Illinois was like”. McGee prepared carefully for the trip, packing layers and bringing her hiking shoes-something that she was thankful for once she saw how steep the trails could get.
Castle Rock’s unique path and high overlooks offered a memorable challenge, but the students took it in stride.
“It was more fun because there were better views,” shared Diaz, as she recalled past hiking experiences. The group enjoyed spotting unique plants and insects along the way with several students, fascinated by the variety of mushrooms growing along the path.
After their hike, the group stopped at The Village Bakery, a local favorite. Students enjoyed a well-deserved lunch—some grabbing pizza sandwiches with pesto and pepperoni, and enjoying wild berry açaí refreshers and strawberry drinks. The post-hike meal gave everyone a chance to relax and get some food in their system.
When asked how they would describe the day in one word, Diaz and McGee said “refreshing” and “peaceful.” Most agreed they would definitely go on another trip like this again. As McGee put it, “being outside with friends makes you appreciate how beautiful nature really is.”
The Travel Club continues to give students opportunities to explore, connect, and learn beyond the classroom. All you have to do is email the advisors to join the club!
