Senior year is a fun yet stressful time that brings cherishable memories, fun events, but also stressful decisions that can make or break one’s future. One of those stressful decisions is deciding whether they want to attend college or not, where they want to attend, and what major.
To help guide students through this stressful time, S.H.S. counselors provide students with representatives from several colleges, small to big, close and far, to help them narrow down their decision. The college representatives present students with information specific to their college with things such as majors they have to offer, clubs, sports, and other activities that students can join, and any other helpful information that helps persuade students to pick their college, as well as helping students narrow down where they really want to go.
Colleges like Southern Illinois (Edwardsville), Augustana, Drake, and Dubuque are some of the upcoming college meetings. Students are excused from class to attend these informative meetings that take place in the counselor’s offices.
One of the most popular college meetings that students usually attend is Sauk Valley Community College. Many students that are unsure of where they want to attend or want to stay close to home often choose SVCC. Additionally, students that are a part of Sauk’s IMPACT program take advantage of this opportunity to continue learning about what Sauk has to offer.
Senior Mackenzie Wolfe, who is a part of the IMPACT program, attended the Sauk session and said, “Sauk stood out to me due to the opportunities within the IMPACT program. My favorite part of the meeting was learning about all the different clubs and activities they have to offer.”
Aside from colleges that are in Illinois, other college representatives from Wisconsin, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, and even Pennsylvania come to give presentations to students.
Similarly, senior Emily Schwingle said, “I wanted to attend Sauk’s meeting because that is where I plan on attending and my favorite part was the lady talking about the different clubs and sports at Sauk like golf.”
Whether students choose to attend college or not, S.H.S. counselors provide students with many great opportunities to help them maneuver through this tough decision.
