The time has come for 2025-26 S.H.S. dance team tryouts. The tryouts will be held in the S.H.S. cafeteria from May 15-16. The first day is from 5:30-7 p.m. and the second day will start at 5:30 and will end when the audition is complete. These tryouts are for both football and basketball season.
In past years, on the first day of auditions, former poms members and the coaches teach a short routine, a sideline and work on skills. On the second day they split the group into multiple smaller groups for the audition. Each group goes one at a time and shows the routine they learned, the sideline, and displays their skills for the coaches.
Your attire should consist of all black, form fitting clothes, and jazz shoes. Your hair should be slicked back into a ponytail or bun with bangs off the face. Jewelry, long or fake nails, distracting hairstyles, and jeans will not be allowed.
Along with the new season there will be a new coach! At this time they have not yet announced the coach.
The coaches are looking for many qualities for each dancer. These include appearance, audience appeal, dance ability, rhythm, knowledge of the routine, precision, jumps, and turns.
Not only are they looking for skills but they are looking for qualities that make someone a good team member. Each of these qualities are what the coaches are looking for to make a great team.
If you do make the team, practice starts in June. Summer practices include weight lifting, technique and skill practice, and the learning of sidelines. They also usually start to learn the first few routines for the season. Over the summer the coaches also begin to look for people who display the qualities of captains and junior representatives.
With a new coach and a new team, this season is sure to be filled with excitement!
