At Sterling High School, the theatre program provides a summer musical available to students. This year, the musical was announced as “The Wedding Singer.”
“The Wedding Singer” is set in 1985, where Adam Sandler plays a brokenhearted man stuck performing as a wedding singer. He is left at the altar by his ex-fiance, but soon meets another woman.
This woman, Julia, employs him to work at her wedding, and help her plan it. In this process, he falls in love, and believes he must win her over before she gets married.
The auditions for this musical take place on May 29 and May 30, but the audition materials are available to all on May 1. Director Weston Henry is releasing the material early so students can spend time perfecting their singing.
During the auditions, students must dance, sing, and act in front of the directors. All students are put into small groups, and do these activities with only their group in the room.
Sophomore Jocelyn Pink states that in preparation for auditions, she “reads through the dialogue a few times and listens to the chosen songs over and over.”
The practices for the summer musical usually start around early June, and the performances will take place the last weekend of July. The practices in the summer typically take place in the middle of the day, from 12-3pm, in order to not clash with sports.
Each year, in the summer, the directors allow all surrounding school districts to come and audition too. This leads to a bigger cast than the normal fall play and spring musical.
Freshman Harper Johnson explains that her favorite part of the musical is the talent outside of Sterling. Since it’s open to any highschool students she can “see and learn from students from other schools.”
Overall, the summer musical is open to all students, and we would love for more students to join!
