With the group interpretation and contest play season coming to an end, also comes the end of the 2024-2025 theatrical season at Sterling High School.
This year’s group interpretation, commonly known as “G.I.” performed their production of the 1993 film “The Sandlot” by David Mickey Events. In the sectional competition hosted at Huntley High School, the G.I. team placed third, falling just behind Huntley High School’s interpretation of “Macbeth” and Mundelein High School’s performance of “Orion and the Dark.” This earned the team a ticket to the state finals competition for the 31st consecutive year.
Sophomore Jocelyn Pink described how “keeping our school’s state-qualifying streak alive feels great as it proves that [the group interpretation] program continues to thrive and be a staple in the group interpretation competition.”
In the G.I.’s preliminary round, the team was unable to advance to finals. However, the All-State Cast Member medal was awarded to six cast members. This honor is given to those who are nominated by four or five of the five preliminary judges. The following cast members were given the All-State medal: seniors Brinley Francis, Ashton Stange, Owen Gaffey, Kyle Hutchison, and Rileigh Wren; juniors Gavin Fischer and Avery Moran. Senior Brinley Francis reflected on receiving her first all-state medal by saying how “being an all-state cast member is such an honor. It is so nice to be rewarded for all the hard work that was put into the success of our show.”
In addition to the success in both sectional and state competitions, this season marked director Weston Henry’s first time leading the direction of a G.I. production. Senior Owen Gaffey noted how “Mr. Henry did an amazing job directing his first G.I. He had a clear vision throughout the entire process and made sure that his vision was met. There was also a more focused and determined atmosphere this year compared to previous years.”
The community and school applauded the cast for their memorable and comedic performances. Overall, it was a successful season for group interpretation and the team has much to be proud of.
