On March 30, 2025, the travel club visited White Pines Roller Rink in Mt. Morris, Ill. Club leaders Heather Johnson and Cami Hartman took 16 students on this trip.
The students spent three hours skating, playing arcade games, and enjoying snacks. They played four corners and a few students joined the races at the end before they headed home.
The club advisors chose roller skating because some of the students have never been skating before. Hartman explained, “It was fun to watch them try something new. Mrs. Johnson and I both enjoyed roller skating when we were young.”
Sophomore Owen Ports explained that his favorite part was “falling back really hard during a race with Jacob Prevo and David Oelrichs!”
For some, it was a chance to share their skills with others.
Sophomore Harper Johnson said, “I have been roller skating before so I really enjoyed being able to attempt to teach others in the group who had never been skating to skate.”
The travel club was created in 2018. Johnson explained, “I absolutely love spending time with students outside of school, exploring museums, cultural institutions, and nature. It never ceases to amaze me the way teens experience wonder and awe when visiting new places, and I’m lucky enough to be a part of that.”
Hartman echoed those statements, sharing, “I love exploring our local areas. We have more to do than what people realize.”
The travel club goes to many different places. In October, they went to the Maquoketa Caves, in December they went to the Dillion home, and in June they will go to Boston.
