Golden Warriors share their favorite books

At Sterling High School, many people love to read. Here are some favorite books at S.H.S.

English teacher Jennifer Thueson loves Kristin Hannah’s books. She states, “The Great Alone is one of my favorites. I grew up in Montana, so the setting resonates with me. I also love the theme of survival from abuse and the elements of nature.”

Senior Addison Boyle chose “The Socialite” by J’nell Ciesielski. It’s about a rich girl who journeyed to find her runaway sister who left with a man who was a part of the Nazi party. She met a Swedish spy along the way, and they began to team up against the Nazis. She ended up unexpectedly falling in love with the spy.

English teacher Hannah Jablow chose “A Court of Thorns and Roses” by Sara J Maas- Book 1 of an ongoing series. A young woman named Feyre kills a wolf to feed her family, and it turns out the wolf is a shapeshifter. Then she gets taken to a new world with magical creatures. The first book follows her relationship with her captor, Tamlin, and the pressure to break the curse on the kingdoms and set everyone free. This is a High fantasy series. There are five published books; the sixth one will be released in 2023-2024.

Senior Olivia Neiderman decided that currently, her favorite book is “Verity” written by Colleen Hoover. This book is filled with many surprises. She states, “It ranges from mystery and romance, I found that I couldn’t put it down.” Verity is about an aspiring writer who moves in with her co-writer, Verity. However, Verity had been in a horrible accident that left her paralyzed. Lowen, Verity’s co-writer, takes a deep dive into a relationship with Verity’s husband. From there, the story further unravels itself into a whirlwind of drama, thriller, and murder.

Junior Sienna Stingley decided her favorite book is “It Ends with us” by Colleen Hoover. It Ends with Us is a book that follows a girl named Lily who has just moved and is ready to start her life after college. Lilyu then meets a guy named Ryle, and she falls for him. As she develops feelings for Ryle. Atlas, her first love reappears and challenges the relationship between Lily and Ryle.

Junior Olivia Melcher chose “It Ends With Us” and “Ugly Love” by Colleen Hoover. “It Ends with Us” tells a story about a woman who grew up around abuse, her father hitting her mother, and now she is in an abusive relationship herself and doesn’t know how to get out of it. Ugly Love is about a woman moving in with her brother, and she falls in love with his best friend. It shows how friendships and relationships can get messy.

Freshman Mya Lira chose “The Glass Castle.” In the book, Jeanette Walls is riding in a taxi in contemporary New York City on her way to an event when she looks out the window and sees her mother digging through the trash. Although her mom has been homeless for years, Jeanette feels a sudden sense of shame and gloom about her mom’s life and begins to reflect on her childhood and how her mom and dad’s choices affected her.
