The fall season is amongst us, and aside from the brisk weather and colorful scenery as the leaves change, it brings a variety of activities for family and friends to engage in. Seasonal activities are not limited to outdoor festivities either, as fall brings plenty of indoor activities for those who prefer a cozier environment.
A great kick off to the season is the Ruffit Park Fall Fest, which occurred September 13. Here, different crafting vendors, food trucks, and child-friendly games are the highlights of the festival, making it perfect for all ages who enjoy simple and local gatherings.
A local favorite is Selmi’s Family Farm in Rock Falls. With a pumpkin patch, corn maze, animal farm, hayrides on the weekends, and a haunted house, Selmi’s seems like the perfect place to spend a day in fall.
The fall festivities do not always stay within Sterling borders either; Jonamac Apple Orchard in Malta, fifty minutes away from Sterling, offers apple picking straight from the trees, the freshest cider and cider donuts, along with a huge corn maze, hayrides, sunflower patch, and children’s play area.
Senior Grace Johnson said, “Jonamac Orchard is such a cute place to take pictures and hangout during fall with friends and family. I went with my friends last year during October and I can’t wait to go again this year.”making it perfect for those who wish to expl ore falls wonders outside of town.”
Besides apple orchard, there are other fun fall activities to do.
S.H.S. Librarian Heather Johnson shared, “I can always be found hiking! Ya girl loves to spend time outside crunching leaves. My favorite places to hike in the fall are Starved Rock State Park, White Pines State Park, Franklin Creek State Park and Castle Rock State Park.”
With orchards, hiking trails, and local events, many have plenty of ways to explore the season.
Fall activities aren’t solely for the outdoors either, there are several seasonal activities to do with friends and family from the comfort of your own home.
Carving pumpkins is an all time classic activity that is entertaining and suitable for all ages, and even if carving isn’t your best skill, painting them is an equally fun alternative.
Senior Grace Mascho said, “I love going out during the fall, it’s a beautiful time to be out but sometimes just staying in and having a fun fall day at home is equally as entertaining, especially on those rainy, foggy days.”
Movie marathons are great for those who want a relaxed way to enjoy the season, especially if scary movies are included. Some smaller activities to celebrate the beginning of such a memorable time is baking with seasonal ingredients, such as pumpkin, to create a delicious pumpkin pie or bread and decorating for the fall or spooky season.
Autumn is a glorious time of year that can be appreciated by every member of our community. From festivals and events, to comforting indoor entertainment, the range of activities allow for everyone to enjoy and celebrate the beauties of fall.
