The school year kicked off with our annual fall jamboree. Meet the Warriors is an exciting way S.H.S. introduces every sport and begins the season. This event was hosted on Friday, August 22, ten teams were introduced including boys soccer, boys and girls golf, volleyball, girls tennis, football, poms, cheerleading, and boys and girls cross country.
Although Meet the Warriors looked similar to past years for the teams and audience, behind the scenes S.H.S. ‘s new athletic director Evan Wyllie directed Meet the Warriors for the first time.
Wyllie said, “My favorite part is seeing all our parents and community members come out and support our teams. The night is also beneficial for me to troubleshoot any issues for the event going forward. Overall, it was a great night of Golden Warrior Athletics.”
Boys soccer had their scrimmage at 4:10. Senior Enrique Ibarra described the event as a “fun way to kick off our season and prepare for future games.”
Boys soccer was followed by football. The poms and cheer teams both performed routines between the junior varsity and varsity scrimmages. This took place at Roscoe Eades Stadium.
Junior Sawyer Springman said, “I think Meet the Warriors went very well this year. Even though we started learning it later this year we still went out there and hit everything perfectly.”
The volleyball scrimmage was held in the Musgrove Fieldhouse, during the varsity football scrimmage. Freshman Arely Rascon said “This was my first year of Meet the Warriors for volleyball and my favorite part was getting that nervous feeling walking up on the sidelines before they call your name.” Throughout Meet the Warriors the audience was reminded of the dates that opened the season for each sport.
Following Meet the Warriors was the annual block party. This is held at the Sterling Schools Foundations building. The event included food, drinks, games, and live auctions. The event is sponsored by the Athletic Booster Club, where all money raised from the event went towards the teams.
The annual jamboree is an event that gets students and parents excited for the upcoming season.
