In honor of a new school year, Sterling High School has created the “Warrior Cafe” that is run by Life Skills teacher Kayla Messer. The Warrior Cafe isn’t just a spot for people to buy delicious breakfast; it’s an opportunity for life skill students to take charge and learn new skills. The cafe is open Mondays through Thursdays from 8:15 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the field house commons concessions area. Students and staff will have the opportunity to purchase bagels for $3 and donuts for $2, along with a variety of drinks like gatorade, water, and pop. But remember that the cafe is cash only!
Visiting the Warrior Cafe is not just a chance to enjoy a morning treat, but also an opportunity to show support for students. Every purchase benefits the Life Skills students allowing them to continue gaining hands-on experience while contributing to the school community. Messer said, “Over the summer, I met with Mr. Austin and discussed the opening of the cafe.” The whole purpose of the cafe is to help “promote job skills and training for the Life Skills students.”
This cafe has also had a positive impact on the students’ confidence and enjoyment. Many of the students have expressed that they “like seeing all the customers” and that they “like being able to serve food, and take money from the customers.” Even though they are serving great food and providing great service, the meaning is way deeper than that.
Teachers decided to open this cafe in hopes that one day life skills students will be able to join the workforce and carry on the skills that they learned. Messer says that teachers are trying to “stimulate a working environment for the students.” Jobs in the cafe include being a “runner” and a seller. The runners are in charge of getting the food and drinks to the counter when someone orders and the seller is in charge of taking money, orders, and telling the runner what they need.
So, if you’re ever hungry or you miss your breakfast, from Monday through Thursday, you can visit the Warrior Cafe and pick up some delicious food.
