Have you noticed the new changes and rules around Sterling High School this year? Walking through the halls of S.H.S., students will notice several changes this year, from new locker rules to building updates. These changes are having a significant impact on students’ lives.
One of the main changes that affects students is the new rule on locker locks. Students now have to lock their lockers at all times. Otherwise, they will get disciplinary action. This isn’t actually a “new” decision but, it is a new change.
This has been a topic that has been talked about for a while at S.H.S. for a while because of safety reasons. S.H.S. principal Jason Austin explains that in “the spring of 2025, they had an increased amount of thefts, all related to opportunity, people saw lockers open and saw things inside and would take them.” An easy way to fix this is to make students lock their lockers, so theft will not be an issue anymore.
Junior Kasey Weeks agrees that “it is good that we lock our lockers because it will keep students’ personal belongings safe.” Another new change is the new teachers that have been added to S.H.S. There are two new English teachers, along with a new Life Skills teacher.
S.H.S. has also increased its support for security with the addition of a new security aid. This is important because it allows the students here to feel safe. It also provides protection and security for the school and students.
In summer 2025, S.H.S. did two big projects. One being they finished the last year of four years of central air conditioning in the math and cafeteria wing. They also updated all the fire doors in the building to increase the safety in case of a fire.
The changes planned for the rest of the year are that Sterling Public Schools is working on a three-year facility plan. This will include new classrooms for the life skills classes (summer of 2026), a student recreation and training center (hopefully start fall of 2025), and the installation of solar panels to help offset our energy usage. This plan will be deeply impactful for the students and will definitely have a big impact.
Overall, there have been many changes here at S.H.S. and many new changes to come.
