This year, senior Mason Hubbard decided to continue his golf athletic and academic career at Sauk Valley Community College (SVCC). While continuing his golfing career, Hubbard strives only to advance his golf game.
“I decided to continue golfing at Sauk because of the opportunity for a full ride scholarship,” Hubbard mentioned. As a result of Hubbard’s hard work and dedication towards golf, he was fortunate enough to receive a full ride scholarship at SVCC.
Hubbard started golfing during his freshman year of high school and practiced an immense amount to gain successful results. Before school, after school, and after work, you would find Hubbard bettering his game.
“I made sure to get lessons from former pro golfers near me to make sure I had the best knowledge and skill to be able to prepare myself for collegiate level golf,” Hubbard shared
A great factor in an athlete excelling in their sport is practicing outside of school. Hubbard jumped at any opportunity in his free time to play in tournaments, take lessons, and be a part of men’s leagues at his local golf course.
“My most memorable accomplishment of my high school career was finishing 11th at state.” Hubbard also shared.
Junior year, Hubbard completed the first out of his many accomplishments of his high school career, qualifying for state. With rough conditions at state junior year, Hubbard came back even stronger his senior year, finishing 11th out of hundreds of the best golfers in Illinois.
“I balanced golf and school by waking up early and practicing before school, then going to school, doing homework on bus rides, and practicing at night,” Hubbard mentioned.
It is very challenging for student-athletes to maintain both school and their sport while thriving in both. Hubbard has been a great student athlete all four years of high school, maintaining school work and a highly successful golfing career.
“What I look forward to most about going to Sauk is my very open and flexible schedule. Also, my team is filled with multiple boys that I have been playing with all of high school,” Hubbard mentioned
Hubbard has been playing with boys all around the Western Big Six since he was a freshman, therefore he has already formed a strong bond with his team at SVCC. This will result in an even greater season for the team.
“After Sauk I plan to continue golfing in leagues and tournaments and make sure I always keep it a part of my life,” Hubbard shared.
Hubbard plans to pursue electrical work after attending college and will continue to practice golf and be involved in the sport.
