As the year comes to an end, finals are coming up. Finals are meant to test the knowledge obtained in the class throughout the entire semester.
This time of year can be substantially stressful for a multitude of students in Sterling High School. However, some seniors may have the chance to not attend finals. There is a certain criteria that can be met so students can be exempt from their exams.
Students must obtain all A’s, B’s, and C’s, have no more than 26 missed class periods this semester (roughly 3.5 days), and have zero referrals given throughout the semester.
If the criteria listed above is met, seniors will not be required to attend the last two days of school. The last day of school for those seniors is Tuesday, May 13.
Senior Maddux Osborn said, “Going into the end of the year every senior’s goal is to qualify for exemptions out of all their finals so as a senior I think it’s very important to strive for those exemptions.”
The students who don’t meet the requirements to exempt finals will get out of school two days later on Thursday, May 15. On May 14th, seniors who are not exempt will attend normal class periods but take their odd period finals. On the 15th, they will have their normal class periods but take their even finals. These are only for seniors who are NOT exempt from their finals.
During these days, exams will be taken for only seniors. It is an S.H.S. tradition that seniors be dismissed before underclassmen, regardless of their grades, attendance, or disciplinary referrals due to
Students are expected to attend a graduation practice at 1:00 p.m. on May 16 in Homer Musgrove Fieldhouse and shortly after all MacBooks and chargers will be handed in to the head of tech Ryan Vasquez.
While nearing the end of the semester, and for some concluding the end of their high school career, it can be stressful with scholarships, sports, working, social life, and even maintaining the criteria required to be met for a finals exemption.
Senior William Ports says “Take it one day at a time and don’t become overwhelmed.” This is a crucial part of success to not procrastinate.
English 4 teacher Ms. Baker tells her favorite thing about finals “My favorite thing is seeing who knows what. Some students will show they know everything; some will show that they are stronger in some areas than others. And it’s all valuable information that helps me make the class better next time I teach it. To make a short answer, it shows me where I can improve as a teacher!”
While this time of year may be stressful, It is good to get a head start by getting your grades up now.
