On March 27, 2025, the Future Educators Club attended a field trip to Jefferson Elementary School. This field trip was during lunch and meant to give students an inside look at what it’s really like working with elementary aged students.
Future Educators Club is a club focused on introducing students who want to be teachers to teacher experiences. The students spent their fifth hour and lunch period at Jefferson. Club advisor and librarian Heather Johnson had club students walk over to the elementary school as it is just a short walk from S.H.S. during their fifth hour. The students then ate lunch and went outside for recess with the kindergarten classes.
Johnson chose to do this with her club because she felt it gave “students a unique opportunity to explore this particular element of what it means to teach in an elementary school.”
Sophomore Jaz’Mya Castaneda, who plans to be a young elementary education teacher when she’s older, felt this field trip benefited her by “showing [her] how kindergarteners interact with each other on a day-to-day basis”.
With the club being centered around being the next generation of teachers, this was insightful for all the students as they got to observe how five and six-year-olds interact not only with their teachers but with their peers as well.
Club members had the opportunity to walk over to Jefferson and eat lunch with the kindergarten classes. The future educators then got to join the elementary students during their recess period.
Senior Kadielynn Nelson, believed this experience “opened [her] eyes to the opportunity of teaching with younger kids”. As she previously wanted to only teach older students, this field trip changed her mind.
Overall, this field trip was a good learning experience for all of the club members and on top of having a glimpse into their future, all of the club members had a blast thanks to Mrs. Johnson and Jefferson Elementary School!
