In this spring season, soon after the Sterling High School Musical, both Group Interpretation (GI) and Contest Play start to take place. These two theatre based activities take place in competitions against other schools.
GI is a 30 minute production that is put on with no costumes, a set that is built only by blocks, and live music. Each script is written based on a book or movie, but can also be an original story.
This year, Weston Henry has based the GI performance on “The Sandlot.” “The Sandlot” is the story of a young kid who moves to a new town, and befriends baseball players.
This will be Henry’s first year being completely in charge of this, due to Timothy Schlegel stepping down. Auditions for this show took place on Sunday, February 9, and the cast list was posted on Friday, February 14.
When asked about how she felt about the cast list, sophomore Jocelyn Pink stated, “I feel like everyone fits their role very well and we had a feeling of who would be who during auditions.”
Contest play, a competition of 30 minute shows that require you to build the set upon arriving, is also taking place. In this competition you are allowed costumes, unlike GI. The Contest play this year is “When the chips are down,” which is about the Red Scare being in full swing, and a teacher that is accused of being a communist.
The auditions took place for this on Tuesday, February 11 and the cast list was released Friday, February 14. Senior Christina Moore stated, “I think contest play will be different this year because we’re tweaking some small things we’ve learned from the past and the script is relevant to current times.”
Both of these competitions’ sectionals will be taking place in Huntley, Ill., on Saturday, March 22. If both move on to state, anyone can come to support at Oaklawn Richards, from March 27 to March 29.
