Track practice for indoor season has started in January and the competitive season is in the progress of starting. The practice for most of February is four days a week, Monday through Thursday, from 3:15 to about 4:30. The practices are held in the hallway right next to the choir room which is by room 150. This practice is for any athletes who are not in a sport currently and are signed up for track. The types of workouts they do are to build their bodies up and gain endurance, they do short distance runs but multiple sets and reps at their top speed.
Sophomore Aiden Lacy is excited for what will come in the next year and looking to repeat the success he achieved last year.
Lacy said, “I’ve been running since 6th grade, and my favorite part of track was the first day of the state meet.”
Junior Ryan Gebhardt is ready for this year’s track team and can’t wait.
Gebhardt said, “I started track in third grade but did not start competing until fifth. My favorite part of track is every time I get a PR in my events, and I’d say my favorite event is either the 100 or 200 because those are the two races that I do best in.”
Senior Joseph Holcomb is a great impact on the track team and one of the leaders, and is a very consistent runner.
Holcomb said, “I’ve ran track for three years, and my favorite part of track is the meets with the team and watching everyone perform. My favorite event would be the 4×400 because the energy is high for it since it’s the last event, and my least favorite place to run is at Rock Island because everytime we run there the weather is always terrible.”
Coach Christopher Lacy is a great sprint coach and he helps track athletes push to their goals and makes them successful in their events. Lacy has been coaching since 2014 and continues to learn new workouts to help the team.
Lacy said, “Doing track made me want to share the whole energy system and to give athletes the best chance at success. I’ve been coaching since 2003 at three different schools. My favorite events are sprints and relays. Favorite thing about track is the pure competition.”
The first meet is March 8, with an indoor meet at Westwood. The track season ends after the state meet which runs from May 29-31. We wish our track athletes a great season and hope they continue to thrive in their journey.
