As course selections near, students should be considering a variety of factors including, their career aspirations, their interests, and their time management capabilities. The S.H.S. Counseling staff will guide students on what courses are necessary to graduation but students themselves are incharge of deciding their interests and aspirations.
For students thinking about college AP courses are a great option, but for students looking to go to trade school or straight into their career WACC classes are a unique opportunity.
Senior Aalin Schmidt said, “WACC has helped me because it’s really different from my normal classes.”
To graduate students need to complete four credits of English, three credits of math, two credits of science, two and a half social studies credits, three and a half credits of gym and health, and seven electives. Students are required to take government, economics, and a minimum of two years of Spanish are recommended.
S.H.S. counselor Darci Francis has many resources for course selections. She recommends basing your class choices off of your goals, which is outlined in her programs of study document.
While picking with your career in mind is important, some students are not quite sure. In that case their interests can guide them. Students who are unsure should take electives in different subjects to see where they are the most engaged.
Senior Audrey Crisp recommended, “When picking classing if you don’t know what to do, just ask. Whether its teachers, councilors, or even seniors, they will likely have great advice for you. Teachers and counselors are here to help you and would love to help you figure out what classes are best for you and your success.”
While selecting courses is difficult, S.H.S. is full of people ready to help, and opportunities for growth and discovery.
