On Wednesday, January 29, student council took 28 of their members to the Northwest District Leadership Conference in Byron, Ill. The conference was supposed to be on November 26 but was rescheduled, due to the speaker A’ric Jackson being delayed due to snow. Jackson could not make it again this time so his coworker Josh ran the workshop. The conference was from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and the group returned to Sterling High School at 2:30.
Student council co-advisor Alexis Ruiz shared, “Student council attends this conference to give StuCo members tools to become good leaders. This conference gives our members an opportunity to work on public speaking, team building, communication, and so many other skills while meeting other StuCo members in the Northwest District.”
At the conference, the students do many different activities and games together to get to know each other better and gain self confidence. The activities vary from lessons and just having fun. The speaker also talks about the different characteristics of a leader.
The conference was inspiring for those who attended.
Freshman representative Emma Pham said, “My take away from the activities at the conference was that in order to grow, sometimes you have to make mistakes or have setbacks if you want to move forward.”
When the conference was over, the students ate pizza for lunch and drove home in the Warrior Wagons.
Sophomore representative Owen Ports said that his favorite part of the conference was “being able to spend time with those that came and working through the activities we did at the conference with the other schools.
S.H.S.’s Student Council has been doing the leadership conference for many years now. Schlemmer said, “I love watching our members interact with other students from different schools and have a good time doing so. This year, advisors from other schools told Mrs. Ruiz and I, how great our members are! Within their small group mixed with other schools, it was fun to see our members act as natural leaders.”
The students got more comfortable with getting to know new people and gave them the perfect opportunity to grow. Student council looks forward to this workshop every year and gives uplifting ideas to think about in terms of friendship.
