Almost every year since 2013 the Sterling High School student council has hosted a fundraiser called Crazy for a Cure to raise money and honor those affected by cancer. This event takes place in the Homer B. Musgrove Fieldhouse. This year it was joined together with a girls basketball game on Thursday, January 16 and a boys basketball game on the 17. This helps to draw in a large crowd for the event.
A couple weeks before the event, student council starts to sell shirts to raise money for the event. There are multiple color options to represent different kinds of cancer. The students are then encouraged to wear these shirts to the games. All of the money that is raised during this event goes toward the CGH Foundation, specifically directed towards cancer care.
Student council also reaches out to local businesses to ask for all sorts of donations. Some common donations include gift baskets, baked goods, and gift cards. The donations are then raffled out to those who have the winning tickets. Some businesses who donated this year are Aurelio’s Bake Shop, Beauty Hutch, Bella Vita Hair Design, Shelby Rae’s and so many more.
Student council advisor Alexis Ruiz said, “My favorite part of the event is the flower presentation. I love being able to see the fighters & survivors be recognized and receive their flowers.”
During the boys game, people who have fought cancer or are currently living with it are asked to stand so that the S.H.S. poms team, boys basketball team, and cheerleaders can personally deliver them a flower.
During halftime of the boys game, the S.H.S. poms team puts on a performance with a group of guys. This is called the Guy Girl dance and they practice the routine the whole week of the game to prepare. This performance is always so much fun to watch and is a fan favorite!
Throughout the years of Crazy for a Cure they have raised about $32,000 to go towards the CGH Foundation and previously the American Cancer Society.
Senior David Luna said that his favorite part about assisting with Crazy for a Cure is “being part of something that supports such a great cause and making a difference for them.
Overall this fundraiser is a huge success and is always a blast to attend as well!
