On Friday, December 13, the S.H.S. Dance Team held their annual kiddie camp performance. They danced during halftime at the boys varsity basketball game. Their theme this year was Winter Wonderland.
Kiddie Camp is a fundraiser that allows for the kids in the community to come and learn dances to perform on the basketball court. Every year cheer usually does their kiddie camp during football season and the dance team does theirs during basketball season.
Sophomore Sophia Torres shared, “I was looking forward to performing the dance with them at the basketball game.”
The kids are divided into three different groups based on age. The first group is 5-6, the second is 7-8 and the third is 9-11. The dance team breaks up into groups for the different age groups and creates a dance together. This year we had 77 kids sign up.
The seniors each choose a different age group to lead. Senior Lillian Reaver was in charge of the 5-6 age group, and they danced to “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” Senior Peyton McCafferty was in charge of the 7-8 age group, and they danced to “Jingle Bell Rock.” Senior Addison Andrew was in charge of the 9-11 age group, and they danced to “Winter Wonderland/ Here Comes Santa Claus.”
Andrews said,“My favorite part of kiddie camp was getting to see the excitement on the kids faces during halftime.”
On Thursday, December 12, the kids had their first practice at the Sterling High School’s cafeteria from 3:30 to 5 p.m. to get to know the kids, teach them the dance, and play some games. Then, on Friday the kids come at six to practice the dances, then they watch us older kids do sidelines before the game, and then they performed during halftime.
Junior Ava Lehman said that her favorite part of kiddie camp is “seeing how excited the girls are to perform on Friday.” The game was packed giving the girls a big audience to perform in front of.
