Senior wrestler Zyan Westbrook entered the record books during the Carson DeJarnatt tournament after he won his weight class for the fourth straight year. Westbrook is only the ninth wrestler in Sterling Wrestling history to be a four-time champion at the renowned tournament.
Westbrook Is one of the most complete wrestlers Sterling High has ever had and has continued to impress the community since his freshman year. Westbrook looks to continue his success throughout this season. While the Western Big Six is a loaded wrestling conference, Westbrook is the clear favorite to win his weight class and to go far into the IHSA State tournament.
Westbrooks teammate Senior Tatum Allen said that, “It was very electric and exciting to witness a friend that I have been teammates with since middle school do something that only 8 other people in SHS history has ever done before. ”
Just before his four-peat performance, Westbrook announced his commitment to Quincy University. Quincy is located in Quincy, Illinois, and the university offers 46 undergraduate majors as well as 24 athletic varsity teams. Quincy is also a well-known private liberal arts, founded in 1860.
Westbrook is a single sport athlete who has competed in wrestling nearly all his life, Westbrook said that wrestling,“has taught [him] the values of hard work and dedication.” Wrestling pushes Westbrook to the limit and continues to create new challenges for him everyday.
Quincy is renowned for taking care of and developing their athletes year in and year out. Westbrook stated, “Quincy has a great wrestling program” and that they are continuously competitive in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, which heavily influenced his ultimate decision to commit.
Not only was the athletic prosperity a major part of Westbrook’s decision to commit but also Quincy’s academics. Westbrook explained that Quincy is a “great academic opportunity that made it the best fit for (him).”
Head Coach Nolan Baker had nothing but high praise for Westbrook saying, “Zyan is the kind of athlete, teammate, and leader that every coach hopes they get lucky enough to have on their team. He has been that way since the day I got here at Sterling three years ago.”
Westbrook will continue to represent Sterling well both on the mat and in the community for the years to come while he wrestles at Quincy.
