The S.H.S. Student of the Month (SotM) is the highest level of academic and extracurricular recognition for S.H.S. seniors. SotM winners are students who have challenged themselves with rigorous courses, are involved in many activities and/or athletics, have taken on a leadership role within the school community, and portray S.H.S. in a positive light. The two students who were awarded this title for October are Jubraan Alkhalaf and Samantha Knox.
Alkhalaf is at the top of his class with a GPA of 4.295 and has participated in many activities at Sterling High School. Alkhalaf has taken a total of 15 AP classes to earn that GPA. Alkhalaf received Freshman Student of the Month, AP Scholar with Distinction, and Rotary Noon Scholar honors.
When not focusing on school work, Alkhalaf has participated in Student Council, Young Doctors League, National Honor Society, Key Club, soccer, tennis, and the scholastic bowl. He is also a two-year publications member, serving as a copy editor during his junior year and co-editor-in-chief his senior year. Outside of school, Alkhalaf is a TA at an Islamic Saturday School, an assistant at a three-day Islamic camp, and a TA at an Islamic summer program.
After high school, Alkhalaf plans to study medicine and become a doctor of infectious diseases.
The other October Student of the Month is senior Samantha Knox. Knox has recorded a GPA of 4.250 while taking 12 AP classes throughout her high school career. Knox has been rewarded with American Legion Reward, Rotary of Excellence, NHS Certificate, CEO Communication and Critical Thinker Award, and earned third place in the CEO Pitch Contest.
When not in school, Knox is in Student Council, Travel Club, National Honor Society, and girls swim and dive. While being the co-captain of the swim and dive team, Knox has received two-time hustle award winner, Western Big Six All-Conference Award, and Week Five Athlete of the Week. She was also a part of the 400 freestyle relay that qualified for state. Knox likes to spend her time volunteering at many places such as the YWCA, blood drive, and helping work the concessions for other S.H.S. events.
After high school, Knox plans to attend a four-year university majoring in finance and minoring in business. Knox will also continue her love for swimming at college.
These two seniors have worked very hard to be role models for all of S.H.S.
