With his family inspiring him, senior Kaedon Phillips recently started his own business. While he is usually busy playing three sports, Phillips uses his very little free time to cut hair.
After trailing his dad for many years while cutting hair, Phillips has learned to cut hair himself. His dad is the owner of Ben’s Phresh Kutz located in Rock Falls.
During his sophomore year of high school, the younger Phillips decided to turn his garage into his own barber shop. Phillips has set up couches, tv’s, and a barber chair.
His dad has provided him with everything he needs to start as a barber. Phillips began promoting himself by making an Instagram account named, “kps_cutz” and has almost gained 500 followers in a year. Phillips’ dad also promotes his son’s barbershop at Ben’s Phresh Cutz.
There is much to enjoy about this new experience. Phillips said, “I like meeting new people and being able to cut all different hair types. Cutting hair is such an important part of my life because it’s an enjoyable way to spend time with my friends.”
Phillips has had to learn how to cut every hairstyle so he can have more customers wanting to come to his barbershop.
He has learned to do fades, trims, line-ups, buzz cuts, etc. Phillips has even started trimming girls’ hair, which is new to him but he’s learning. Phillips is hoping to keep this profession throughout his life.
Frequent customer Jimmy Wadsworth said, “After going to Kaedon’s barbershop, I have noticed a significant increase on how my haircuts look. They look better than my last barber and I’ve received many compliments.”
Another customer, senior Maddux Osborn said, “I prefer to go to Kaedon because he’s always open to arrangements and always snaps on my hair.”
Phillips is looking to attend college and graduate after four years. Then he will attend barber school for his barber’s license. Phillips hopes to open his own barber shop and work full-time there one day.
