The S.H.S cheerleaders hosted a cheer kiddie camp, for ages kindergarten to 8th graders to help raise money for the cheer fund. This event was four days long, the first three days the kids practiced at the S.H.S cafeteria and on the fourth day the kids performed at Roscoe Eades stadium. The price for this camp was $30 for three days of practicing and a shirt to go along with the theme “Cheer for the Cure.”
The camp days were October 15 to the 17, with the performance being on October 18th. Each camp day was separated into time frames by grade level. Kindergarten to second grade practiced from 4-5 p.m., third through fifth grade practiced at 5:15-6:15 p.m., and sixth grade through eighth grade practiced 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. During these days the camp attendees learned cheers, jumps, stunts, and a short dance routine. Junior Carlee Hawkins explained “my favorite part of kiddie camp is seeing how excited the kids got when learning the cheers.”
At Thursday’s practice, camp attendees each received a “Cheer for the Cure” pink and teal shirt to match with the S.H.S. cheerleaders. After they received their shirts, each group practiced and cleaned up their cheers and dance. Towards the end of the practice time, camp attendees performed their cheers and dance to their parents and guardians to showcase what they’ve learned and in case they wouldn’t be able to see it at the game.
Freshman Vivianna Torres added, “Kiddie camp was a great experience. My favorite part was seeing the joy on their faces while performing.”
On October 18, kindergarten-5th grade camp attendees were dropped off at Homer B. Musgrove Fieldhouse for check in and waited to be brought out by the S.H.S Cheerleaders during the junior varsity halftime. The 6th-8th graders performed during varsity’s halftime. All grades learned up to two sideline cheers and a dance. Kindergarten- 2nd graders performed “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson, third-fifth graders “Firework” by Katy Perry, and sixth-eighth “Confident” by Demi Lovato.
The cheer kiddie camp made about $2,500 for the SHS cheerleading fund. Overall the S.H.S cheer kiddie camp was a huge success in raising money for cheerleading and making a fun experience for all the future shs cheerleaders.
