The S.H.S. Student of the Month (SoTM) is the highest level of academic and extracurricular recognition for S.H.S. seniors. SoTM winners are students who have challenged themselves with rigorous courses, are involved in many activities and/or athletics, have taken on a leadership role within the school community, and portray S.H.S. in a positive light. The two students that were awarded this title for September are Adamari Gutierrez and Will Ports.
Within her high school career, Gutierrez has proven her worth at S.H.S. with the many clubs and activities she is involved in; she has also worked very hard throughout high school to maintain a 3.892 GPA. Gutierrez has taken rigorous courses such as AP Biology, AP Language & Composition, AP U.S. History, and Accelerated Algebra 2 to give herself a challenge during her time at S.H.S.
In addition to her course load, Gutierrez is involved in student council, varsity tennis, and soccer. In student council, Gutierrez claimed the role of junior representative. As junior rep, she also organizes monthly visits to Franklin Elementary School.
Following her high school career, Gutierrez plans to go to college and major in biology and minor in psychology. Her overall goal after she gets her undergraduate is to pursue her certification to become a physician assistant in pediatrics.
The other student of the month recipient is Will Ports. Ports is a proud academic leader with a 4.3 gpa. To achieve this high gpa Ports partook in AP Human Geography, AP Biology, AP U.S. History, AP Language and Composition, AP Chemistry, AP Precalculus, AP Government, and AP Calculus. He also completed accelerated classes in math, english, and science.
When not focusing on school work, Ports participates in student council, football, young doctors league, and national honors society. In his high school career Ports also participated in tennis, baseball, track, and scholastic bowl.
After high school Ports is planning on going to a university and going into something in the medical field. His main path he wants to go on at the moment is dentistry.
These two dedicated individuals have put all their effort into being the best students they possibly could be at Sterling High School.
