On October 7, 2024, the 2A girls golf sectionals took place at Rockford-Boylan. Junior Emily Schwingle and senior Carmen Camacho were the two qualifiers from the Sterling High School girls golf team. Schwingle shot an impressive 84, placing 8th at regionals, while Camacho fired a 91 to place 16th.
After regionals, Emily Schwingle stated she “played the course the day before and she went out every day to our home course to practice” as a way to prepare her for this year’s sectionals. Practicing is a very important factor of being successful in golf as without constantly rehearsing your moves and strategies, your score will heighten dramatically. All of the golfers have to be concentrated on what type of course they are playing, depending on if it’s hot or cold, or full of hills they have to know which clubs to use.
Emily Schwingle explains, “The course was really dry so if your ball wasn’t in the fairway it was really hard to be successful.” Dry grass makes it very difficult for the girls to swing their clubs through the ball. Even with this obstacle in the way, both Emily Schwingle and Carmen Camacho tried their hardest on the course.
With this, both of these girls did not continue to state, but they both did a fabulous job at sectionals, especially due to the course conditions that day. The score that was needed to get out of sectionals was an 84 or lower, the 84 would’ve gotten them into a playoff for the final individual spot.
Even though they did not continue, Coach Weston Henry expressed that he was “super proud of Emily Schwingle and Carmen Camacho on their achievement of Sectional qualifiers” and “both of them had making sectionals as one of their season goals and it was awesome to see them achieve their goals this season.”
These girls should be very proud of both of their achievements throughout this year in golf.
