As the school year started, Sterling High School held their annual “Meet The Warriors” with a S.H.S. Block Party following after. This event was hosted on Friday, August 23, beginning with the fall sports jamboree at 4:10 p.m. with a soccer scrimmage. There were 10 teams that were introduced including boys soccer, boys and girls golf, volleyball, girls tennis, football, cheer, poms, and boys and girls cross country.
Both cheer and poms had a routine that they worked to put together during the summer to perform for everyone at Roscoe Eades Stadium.
Freshman cheerleader Chloe Stumpenhorst said, “I thought my very first Meet the Warriors went very well. I enjoyed it. Performing our routine and cheering in front of the crowd was enjoyable.”
The football team scrimmage was also held at Roscoe Eades Stadium.
Senior football player Kaedon Phillips shared, “For my last Meet the Warriors for football, I was a little sad. The past two years playing for Sterling football have been the best due to the coaches and teammates that have helped me along the way.”
Volleyball played a scrimmage against each other to show the improvements they have made during summer practice in Musgrove Fieldhouse. During the varsity football scrimmage, two $250 winners were announced.
After all teams were announced and scrimmaged, the annual block party was held at the Sterling Schools Foundation beginning at 7 p.m. including a bag tournament, music, food, drinks, and live auctions. This event was sponsored by Sterling Athletic Booster Club and the Sterling Schools Foundation. Money raised from ticket sales that athletes sold went to those athletic teams. Raffles began at 5 p.m. and ended at 7 p.m. prizes ranged from $250-$2500.
Football coach Dave Campbell finds Meet the Warriors invaluable.
Campbell shared, “This event gives the kids a live look at a real game. Having officials at this scrimmage gives the players what to expect and having to follow the rules of the game. They get many live reps and show what everyone is looking for.”
This annual jamboree is held yearly and is a very popular event that gets everyone excited and ready for the year to come.
