As the school year kicks off, it is important to start the year off well in order to set the tone for the rest of the year, and, in the case of freshman, the rest of high school. How you do in high school will be very important to colleges that are considering accepting you.
It is always important to get a good start on the year academically. Doing well academically requires hard work not only in school, but outside of it.
Good study habits are necessary in order to excel academically. Many people find success in taking notes in class, or downloading the slides and going over them at home. I personally like going over the slides and testing myself on the material in order to make sure I truly understand it.
Senior Adamari Gutierrez emphasized that freshmen should not “hesitate to ask for help because teachers ultimately want you to do well.” Gutierrez also stressed to “not fall behind, getting caught up will gradually get harder as time goes on.” Falling behind will lead to a domino effect of missing more and more work as you try to make up what you should have done.
Senior Patrick Riley recommends taking as many AP classes as you can handle. AP classes are a great way to get college credit, saving you not only time, but also money in the long run. Riley also regrets not “being involved in clubs like Student Council” since they do so many fun things like planning Homecoming.
Trying out for sports and joining clubs that interest you are a great way to involve yourself in your school. The worst that can happen is you disliking the activity and being able to drop it.
The beginning of the school year is always important as it sets the tone for the year to come. It is important to stay on top of your work and try to be involved in S.H.S.
