On May 17, S.H.S. student council life skills committee will be beginning a new annual tradition: the SPS First Annual Life Skills Field Day. Life Skills students from all SPS will join together at Roscoe Eades Stadium from 8:50 a.m.-11:15 a.m. to do various field events and enjoy a sweet treat.
All school year, student council has been hosting “life skills hangouts” where they meet once a month with one or both of the life skills classes from the high school and do an activity together. Sophomore Gavin Fischer, head of the student council life skills committee, wanted to plan a field day so all life skills students from the district can participate.
Fischer said, “I’ve put a lot of planning and hard work into putting together such an elaborate event.”
A lot of planning has gone into this field day for both the student council life skills committee as well as the various teachers and aids that teach the district’s life skills classes Since this activity is district-wide including classes from Challand Middle School, Jefferson Elementary School, and Washington Elementary School.
Marquez Williams, an aide for life skills teacher Pete Hill’s class, “[loves] the inclusion of all Life Skills, not just the High School so this gives the an opportunity to meet friends a like.” Williams has attended most of the life skills hangouts this year but said he is most excited about this field day.
For this, student council members will be split up as team leaders with teams that have a few students from every school on them, allowing everyone to meet new people and possibly form new friendships. These teams will then go through eight different stations with various games at them that they have 10 minutes to complete. One of these stations will be a surprise appearance from Kona Ice for a snack.
With the end of the school year fast approaching, student council life skills committee members are thrilled for the 1st Annual Life Skills Field Day to take place!
