The National Honor Society (NHS) hosted a food drive starting April 15 to April 19. Students and staff were encouraged to bring canned goods to their fourth hour class for donations towards local food pantries to get the shelves stocked. The class with the most donations got a treat as well.
NHS has held food drives each year especially during the holidays. Even though it was not holiday season, NHS still wanted to help those in need. This food drive had seven classrooms participating.
NHS had no goal other than just helping those in need and trying to get as many donations to do so. Advisor Darci Francis and NHS members juniors Natalie Eddinger and Dasia Lewis helped organize this food drive as well as promoting it.
The food drive donations were collected on Friday, April 19 during fourth hour. All seniors of NHS helped collect the donations as well as some NHS members. Overall they had received roughly 100 food items.
Lewis explains, “I felt that the food drive went pretty well although I had hoped a few more people would’ve participated in bringing goods.”
The winning fourth hour class was Spanish teacher Cesar Guerrero’s Spanish class. They contributed 34 donations to the food drive. This was calculated over the weekend after the donations were taken on friday. Their treat for raising the most food items were dilly bars from Dairy Queen. The class got it on Tuesday April 23.
Although the food drive didn’t get as many donations as the previous years, NHS were still grateful for what they’ve received and they encourage more students and staff to contribute as the years go on.
Francis said, “Our main goal is to keep the shelves stocked at our local pantries.”
