Dresses hit prom shops for the 2024 season

Dresses+hit+prom+shops+for+the+2024+season

With the beginning of the second semester, there comes the much-awaited preparation for prom season. Although prom is still months away, students should begin to prepare now to get dresses that suit them best for the big night.

Each year, the style and types of dress changes due to growth and personal preference. For 2024, there seems to be more of a variety than ever. TikToks having to do with dress types have been popping up on more and more girls’ “for you page.” Some of the star dress types for this year may include ruffles, halter, and cutouts.

Junior Payton Ottens said her favorite dress type is “definitely the mermaid dress type that’s snug/sleek and has lots of sparkles or sequins.” Ottens has gone to prom the previous twi years and with the years going by changes her personality as does her dress preferences.

For many girls, prom is the day they look forward to the most, not because of the dance, but because of the preparation leading up to it. A lot of girls buy their dresses far in advance because dress shops have a rule where once someone buys a dress, that dress is not allowed to be worn by anyone else in that school. This is due to the fact that prom is supposed to be a night where everyone should feel special and get to have a night that is personal to only them.

There have been many videos posted about people’s personal experiences with past Proms all over social media, and these videos can be a huge factor in the deciding process of picking out a dress. There is a trend going around on Tiktok that features the title, “rating Prom dresses I tried on but with audios.” The video then moves on to a collage of pictures of girls in a variety of dresses with funny audios that can help others watching see dresses fitted on to others with their specific body type. People sometimes underestimate how stressful picking out your dress can be.

Junior Dasia Lewis, who attended prom last year, said, “I took over four hours picking out a dress I will probably only wear once or twice.”

Last year a lot of girls went for a more casual look, wearing long sundresses and curled hair instead of the traditional sparkles and up-do’s. This trend got a lot of backlash. Some disagreed with this look because they believe prom should be about getting fancy and looking more glammed up than usual. Some disagreed because it simply looked tacky and underdressed. This trend has not been as popular this year, but as the months go on that may change.

If you are going to prom for the first time this year and are struggling with what dress to pick out, I suggest going through Tiktoks or Youtube videos that have ratings and pictures about other girls’ dresses to see what someone else’s thoughts are. But overall, go to prom in something that you feel the most comfortable in because prom is supposed to be a night where you have fun and be yourself.
