Starting in November, the speech team begins to look through scripts, monologues, and n books to help them practice bringing their events back to life. The team will continue to practice and improve their pieces all the way through February.
Going from 4 members last year to 10 this year, the speech team has really started to grow. Senior Michelle Henderson-Bellows and Junior Religh Wren have taken up the leadership roles within this year’s group. Wren has been doing speech along with other theatrical activities for three years.
A new member joining the speech team is Christina Moore. Moore is excited for this speech season because she will “be able to express myself in a way I haven’t really gotten to before.” Moore started out in Contest Play last year and she saw Speech as an opportunity to “give me a new creative outlet!” Moore just started doing activities that are a part of the Theater Department her sophomore year when she was a part of Contest Play.
Coach Victoria Duffin has stated that something new ‘speechies’ should know is ,“how different speech is compared to other activities/sports or even other theater activities. It is definitely a world of its own- but also totally worth it!” Something speech teaches you is how to be more confident in your speaking voice. Whilst other activities, like theater, teach you that as well, speech helps you speak in front of an audience in your own voice, not embodying somebody else.
As speech continues to grow, it is constantly looking for new members. If you are wanting to start, don’t be afraid to ask! Speech is such a vastly different world, it can be super overwhelming! There are many people who have been doing speech since they were in middle school. They are the best people to go to. There is no dumb question here!
