Junior and seniors from Sterling High School (SHS) get inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS) every November. This year, 37 students got inducted on November 14. These students applied and met the requirements for the membership, which is scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
To begin the ceremony the senior officers Owen Anderson, Rhylee Wade, Kirsten Workman, and Emily Lofgren gave speeches about scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Students then received their certificates and a candle, and they lit the candle of the person sitting next to them.
After every candle was lit, students stated the NHS pledge in promise of continuing to meet the requirements to remain as a member. Now as new members, students held their candles and walked together in a line past the crowd of their guardians, families, and friends.
The induction ceremony for the NHS welcomed new members to be representatives for the organization. Students promised to maintain the qualifications to pursue a membership in the National Honor Society of Sterling High School.
NHS co-advisor Darci Francis stated that students must have “at least a 3.00 GPA, stay involved in the classroom and extra-curricular activities, perform monthly community service, and attend chapter meetings.”
New member junior Nora Truedson expressed, “I love helping people and donating my time to those in need. I hope to share my opinion and make a change for the better, in the schools and in my community.”
To apply, students needed to fill out a form which contained various questions. After the deadline for the forms, the applicants were discussed by S.H.S. employees who then determined if the student would be a reliable and hardworking member based on their responses in the form.
Founded in 1921, National Honor Society is one of the oldest and largest high school student recognized organizations in America. Congratulations to all of the inductees of the S.H.S. National Honor Society.
